Three Tips to Crush Sugar Cravings

Sugar cravings can get the best of you, ruin your health, derail your weight goals and mess with your mood. Stressful times, lack of sleep, candida overgrowth and imbalanced hormones can make you vulnerable to sugar cravings. It’s a vicious cycle down the rabbit hole. Long term intake of sugar causes dopamine levels to lower, triggering sugar cravings in the brain for that hit of “feel good” chemicals. Sugar can be as addictive as cocaine and a sneaky culprit that causes inflammation, mood disorders, weight-gain, hormone imbalances and more… so how do you get off the stuff?

Our cravings are governed by our hormones, our gut bacteria and our blood-sugar. If any or all of these factors aren’t addressed, quitting sugar will feel like an uphill battle. Naturally eliminating your cravings for sugar requires more than will-power. Instead, turning to science and the inner workings of your body is an effective way to stop sugar cravings naturally, and with more ease. There is truly a biomedical reaction when we eat sugar as it releases opioids and dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects one’s adrenal system and produces a ‘high’ or reward feeling in the body, leading to compulsive behavior, not to mention weight gain, hormone imbalances, adrenal burnout, thyroid issues and much more. Did you know that the more sugar you eat, the more you are building up a tolerance to the white stuff and getting more hardwired to desiring it! You set your body and brain up for cravings, bingeing and withdrawals.

Since our body-mind is all intertwined,  here are three helpful tips to crush your sugar cravings:

  1. Reduce Stress! There is no easy way around this one. Truth be told, there are numerous studies that show the link between stress, depression and anxiety along with one’s  food choices of sugary products. Research shows an increased eating of sweet foods by emotional eaters during stress, and it may compromise the health of susceptible individuals through deleterious stress-related changes in food choices. Since stress results in an altered brain-gut axis, it’s best to incorporate daily stress reduction strategies. Get to the root of the stress problem and address it with stress reduction strategies like deep breathing, meditation, walking in nature, going to a support group or another positive stress reduction strategy. You must look the stress head on in order to crush your sugar cravings. Hiding from the fear or believing there is nothing you can do to help your situation, will only make you develop a victim mindset and there’s no way out of that hell.
  2. Get Enough Sleep; the minute you are not getting enough sleep is when you will reach for more sugary stuff to give you that quick pick-me-up…aka, sugar rush. Do not be fooled by this because once the sugar rush hits rock bottom then your body will tell you that it needs more sugary stuff to stay energized. This is a vicious cycle to break. Never underestimate the power of a good night sleep.  You need quality sleep everyday. Your body and mind will thank you for that. There is no coincidence between eating poorly and not getting enough sleep. Research shows that you will indeed grab sugary foods when you are tired. Just think how amazing how will feel tomorrow after a well deserved sleep. You will be more alert to make better food choices and your skin will look refreshed and glowing…just another benefit!
  3. Balance Your Blood Sugar by eating protein; I recommend this to all my clients…keep a food journal to monitor if your meals have enough protein to keep your blood sugar levels even throughout the day. You’d be surprised how you may be eating all day long until you start writing it down. How much water are you drinking? Do you eat protein with each meal and what are your snacks all about? Track how many sugar grams you are consuming and remember to keep it to 21 grams daily. When you make a conscious effort to add more healthy lean protein to your meals, you will discover that your energy, and mood are good and your sugar cravings are lowered.

You can do this! Remember your health is worth it because YOU are worth it!
