What exactly is a superfood?
Superfoods are nutrient dense foods offering a powerful infusion of clean protein, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, healthy fats, amino acids and other nutrients. Superfoods are great to add to your meals or eat as snack food on your journey to reaching your optimal health goals.
Here’s nine superfoods worth trying:
- Goji Berries (Wolfberries): Used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 5,000 years, goji berries regarded as a longevity, and strength-building food containing 18 kinds of amino acids, all 8 essential amino acids, up to 21 trace minerals, antioxidants, iron, polysaccharides, vitamins ad minerals. Note: Buyer Beware of “Wild crafted” goji berries as they may not be wild crafted but domestically grown and often fertilized and sprayed with chemicals. Nearly all “wild crafted” goji berries we have tested are heavily sprayed with sulfur dioxide.
- Maca: A staple in the Peruvian Andes for thousands of years, this superfood increases energy, endurance, strength, and libido. Dried maca powder contains at least 10% protein, 18 amino acids, and 7 essential amino acids. It is a root crop and contains five times more protein than a potato and four times more fiber. Maca is not a complete protein but it is a great source of hormone precursors and provides many of the same health effects of a high-protein diet.
- Coconut Oil: Coconut oil restores natural saturated fat levels to the skin, subcutaneous fat layers, and to individual cell membranes. Coconut oil assists in boosting metabolism and the immune system as it contains healthy anti-viral saturated fatty acids such as lauric acid.
- Hemp Seeds, Powder, and Oil: Hemp Products in their raw form are packed with 33 % pure digestible protein, rich in iron, amino acids, vitamin E, omega-3’s and GLA. Hemp contains three times the vitamin E contained in flax. Hemp Protein is a balanced, “whole” protein, rich in essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. Did you know that hemp is one of very few plants that contains both of Omega 6 (GLA) and Omega 3 (ALA)?
- Spirulina (one of my favorites!): The world’s highest source of complete protein (65%), spirulina provides a vast array of minerals, iron, amino acids, trace elements, phytonutrients and enzymes. Spirulina is an edible algae, It is known as an excellent blood detoxifier and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels as well. Spirulina is a well respected herbal remedy for hypothyroidism because it contains high levels of iodine, beta carotene, and tyrosine. It has also been known to stimulate immune function, which can be slowed by an underactive thyroid. Spirulina supports both weight loss and healthy weight maintenance.
- Sea Vegetables & Seaweeds (kelp, dulse, nori, hijiki): Sea vegetables help remove heavy metals, detoxify the body, provide numerous trace minerals, regulate cholesterol, and decrease the risk of cancer. Seaweeds are high in iodine and boost immune system, adrenals, and hormone function.
- Ground KELP Granules: Kelp granules are rich source of potassium, iron, iodine, vitamin B6, riboflavin, and dietary fiber, and also contain a natural substance, glutamic acid, that enhances flavor and tenderizes fibrous foods. Phytochemicals in kelp have been shown to absorb and eliminate radioactive elements and heavy metal contaminants from our bodies. Kelp are rich in alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium and been known to normalize and calm behavior. A lack of proper mineral nutrition has been implicated in practically every symptom of poor health and emotionally extreme behavior.
- Medicinal Mushrooms (Reishi, Cordyceps, Maitake, Shiitake, Lion’s mane): Medicinal mushrooms are high in polysaccharides and super immune enhancing components and boost immune system, support connective-tissue building, joint healing, and skin. Medicinal mushrooms help to detoxify the body of certain synthetic chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) found in plastics.
- Blue Mangosteen: Rich in powerful free-radical scavenging antioxidants, blue mangosteen enhances the body’s natural inflammation fighting response and effective for improving joint function and flexibility. Other benefits include improved mental energy, focus, an enhanced immune system.
