We need to look at what sunscreen we are using.
There’s been media coverage on the new research from the FDA that these four chemicals (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule) found in sunscreen, get absorbed into the bloodstream. The chemicals in sunscreen seep into your bloodstream after just one day, FDA says. Applying about 1 ounce every 2 hours when in the sun increased the amount of these four chemicals in the bloodstream to levels the agency says triggers the need for more testing, potentially raising health concerns. These ingredients are known as endocrine disruptors. Another ingredient, retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A may harm skin because it can react with UV rays and increase the risk of skin tumors.
What to do? Luckily for the research and recommendations from ConsumerReports and EWG, here’s a list of this year’s safer sunscreens.
At the bottom of this list are the most toxic sunscreens to avoid.
It’s worth your time to check what you are using for yourself and loved ones and substitute for a healthier sunscreen.
