Kidney Stones

Did you know there’s a higher prevalence of kidney stones in the summer? Kidney stones affect approximately 3.8 million people in the U.S. each year and they are especially more common in the summer.
According to Mayo Clinic, heat, humidity and lack of proper hydration are factors increasing prevalence.
If you are vulnerable to them then follow a low-oxalate diet to avoid oxalate buildup and a low-purine diet to avoid uric acid buildup.

Oxalates are natural substances found in a wide variety of foods. Your body can produce oxalate on its own or get it from your food. Vitamin C can be converted into oxalate. High levels of oxalates are found in leafy green vegetables, spinach, bran flakes, rhubarb, beets, potato chips, French fries, nuts, and nut butter, to name a few.

A health concern about oxalate is that it can bind to minerals in the gut preventing the body from absorbing them. Anyone who has taken antibiotics or suffers from gut issues may benefit from a low-oxalate diet.

Too many oxalates may cause kidney stones in some people. Two aspects of oxalates that have been extensively studied are their relationship to calcium absorption and metabolism, and their relationship to kidney stone formation.

Testing oxalate levels is essential because high oxalates can be very dangerous. 

Oxalate crystals have a sharp physical structure that can cause oxidative damage, increase inflammation, and damage tissues. They may form in your joints, blood vessels, muscles, kidneys, lungs, heart, thyroid, eyes, and the brain hindering vital body functions, negatively affect the mitochondria, and contribute to kidney stones. Oxalates may form in the bones, crowding out bone marrow cells leading to anemia and immunosuppression.
