Hi it’s Nancy Guberti. Functional medicine specialist, nutritionist and healthy lifestyle coach. I have a question for you. Is your sunscreen safe?

Today, I saw one of my neighbors spraying his daughter with a sunscreen and it wasn’t a healthy one. I don’t judge anyone. I think the problem lies in awareness. We are all very educated, intelligent individuals and we don’t want to use products that can cause health hazards to our loved ones or ourselves. Especially the ones that are the most vulnerable–our children and elderly. So, I want to empower you with the knowledge of how to choose the safest and healthiest sunscreen for yourself and your loved ones. If you haven’t heard of environmental working group, I’m going to include the link (EWG.org), because they checked over 952 products for sunscreens and only 15% of those were healthy and used the right ingredients. Most of them had health hazards linked to endocrine & hormonal and other issues and the actual ingredients that thought were protecting you weren’t.

You want to look at products that have Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide. You don’t want different versions of that. So if you look at the products that you have then just go right to the back and see what the ingredients are–the active ingredients and determine if you have one of those two. If you don’t, chuck this and go for one of the products that were tested to be effective as well as healthy. Now, lots of times people also put different stuff on their face. And then don’t forget to wear your sunglasses because what happens is that you let too much sun go in your eyes. You can get headaches. You crinkle up your face and get wrinkles as well. It’s okay to have some sun so to go out for let’s say 10-15 minutes to get vitamin D, not only for your eyes as well as your skin–that’s great. But you have to do it at the right time of the day. You can’t do it when the full sun is out. So, I would suggest that you are aware of what you are putting on your body as well as in your body. So this all about keeping yourself safe and choosing the right sunscreen so you don’t end up absorbing all the bad nutrients and not even protecting yourself against the sun. I hope that you have a very healthy and sunny summer and you choose wisely.

Remember, your health is worth it because you are worth it. Bye now.
