Sinus Pain Awareness Month

Over 37 million Americans have sought medical attention for sinus related illness each year. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the rising number of sinusitis may possibly be related to increased pollution, urban sprawl and antibiotic resistance. I’d take it a step further, digging deeper into how our food is raised with overuse of antibiotics in dairy and meat products. In addition, one needs to look at one’s lifestyle and see what factors can be contributing to their systematic inflammation.

Sinusitis is inflammation of the membrane lining in the sinus. Medication or surgery is the conventional treatment. Common symptoms are facial pain or pressure, nasal discharge, diminished sense of smell, cough, nasal obstruction, fever, bad breath, dental pain, and/or fatigue. If experiencing these symptoms then seek advice from a qualified, trusted medical practitioner.  If you do need to take antibiotics then remember to add a quality probiotic to keep your flora balanced and healthy.

There are some beneficial natural treatments to keep your mucous membranes healthy:

  • stay hydrated
  • add a splash of apple cider vinegar to your water and drink several times daily
  • adding spicy foods like cayenne pepper, horseradish helps dissolve excess mucous
  • give yourself a five minute face massage
  • steam inhalation and add a few drops of peppermint oil and eucalyptus
  • get a Neti pot and add saline drops, GSE (grapefruit seed extract) nasal spray and smart silver drops to clear out unwanted mucus and provide relief
  • grapefruit seed extract, turmeric, ginger, vitamin C, oregano oil are all natural anti-microbials
  • drink mullein and pau d’arco teas
  • eliminate dairy, gluten, and sugar from your food regime

Try one or several natural strategies to see what works best for you and say good bye to sinusitis for good!
