Importance of Enzymes

Digestion is a complex process that we many times take for granted and do not put much thought into until we start to experience some gastrointestinal distress. Digestion does not just happen. One of the major factors to assist with digestion and absorption of food are enzymes. If you eat food that is enzyme-depleted as in processed foods, your body will not get maximum utilization of the food. In turn, this causes toxicity and inflammation in the body.

Enzymes are your body’s work force. Acting as catalysts in hundreds of thousands of chemical reactions that take place throughout the body, enzymes are essential for digestion and absorption of food, conversion of food into body tissue, and for the production of energy at the cellular level. Enzymes are needed for the metabolic activities taking place in your body every moment. Scientists believe that life ends when your enzymes are depleted.  Fresh raw foods are a tremendous source of enzymes. If juicing raw vegetables then the juice is best to be consumed within twenty to thirty minutes to obtain the full benefit. In addition, enzyme supplementation has cured many health issues ranging from colic to acid reflux and indigestion.

All living cells contain enzymes. Some are called “food” enzymes. Enzymes provided by the pancreas are called “digestive” enzymes. Food enzymes are designed to digest damaged cells. We see this in action when a cut apple turns brown. Likewise when a fruit or vegetable rots; in reality, it is being digested by its own enzymes. Have you ever wondered how scientists are able to genetically engineer fruits and vegetables to stay fresher longer? That is because the enzyme content of the fruit or vegetable is reduced and slowed down so it does not digest itself as quickly. You must then ponder what benefit is it to you to eat enzyme depleted foods.

Enzymes are destroyed by heating to as low as 118ºF. When we continually cook our foods, we deprive our bodies of the enzymes in the food. This shortfall is made up by the pancreas which has limited ability to produce enzymes as well as to perform the other functions, such as providing insulin and playing a major role in the functionality of our immune system. The digestive process may require different enzymes in order to accomplish the digestion of one meal.

Enzyme supplementation with plant enzymes, works in a broader pH range than pancreatic enzymes, and will help digest your food. Digestive enzymes lessens the burden of your digestive system and offers relief  for your digestive organs. As always, quality is key when choosing digestive enzymes.
