Ebola Spreading Fear What are the facts? How can I boost my immune system now?

To address the calls and emails received, I wanted to share some informative and possible preventive strategies for you to incorporate in your daily regime. Awareness and knowledge will provide empowerment as opposed to fear.

First, let’s look at what Ebola is according to the CDC, it is known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever and is caused by an infection with one of the four Ebola virus strains. (There are five strains of Ebola virus but four have been identified to cause disease in humans.) The virus can spread from wild animals to humans and through human-to-human transmission of any bodily fluids as well as entering through broken skin or unprotected mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose or mouth.

Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in Congo and appeared sporadically in Africa. It is believed to be animal-borne and most likely bats. Outbreaks have occurred in Gabon, South Sudan, Ivy Coast, Uganda, ROC, South Africa, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone. Localized transmission in Nigeria, Spain (Madrid), in U.S. (Texas, NYC) and travel-associated in Mali (Kayes) and Sengal (Dakar).

What are the signs and symptoms of Ebola:

Fever, Severe Headache, Muscle Pain, Weakness, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, Unexplained Hemorrhaging (bleeding or bruising).

Symptoms can occur from 2 to 21 days after exposure but average is 8 to 10 days.

Since recovery from Ebola depends on good supportive clinical care and the person’s immune response then it would make sense to ramp up one’s immune system now.

How to determine if you have been infected with Ebola, do you have the symptoms? If you feel like you do then you can get tested with an ELISA lab test, IgM Elisa, PCR, Virus isolation or IgM and IgG antibodies lab test depending on timeline of infection.

Basic clinical treatment would be providing IV and balancing electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure, medications to control fever, help the blood clot,  and treating other co-infections if they occur. People who have recovered from Ebola develop antibodies so that may also be an optional treatment.

Here’s some DIY prevention strategies:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Use topical silver gel.
  3. Do not handle anything from an infected person.
  4. Avoid raw meats.
  5. Do not travel to affected countries if possible. If you travel abroad then monitor your health for 21 days and seek medical care immediately if you develop any Ebola symptoms.
  6. Reduce sugar and eat non-gmo foods and organic wherever possible.
  7. Increase organic vegetables in your daily food intake.
  8. Drink purified water to stay hydrated.
  9. Get adequate daily sleep.
  10. Deal with stress so at the least, not to raise free radicals and shut down digestion.
  11. Incorporate non-strenuous exercising as exercise can stimulate the immune system.

Boost one’s immune system with some immune boosting supplements:

Supplements:

1.Probiotic to rebalance intestinal flora that are critical to your health and absorption of vital nutrients, assists with increasing immune function, Vitamin D levels and helps with metabolic syndrome.

2. Vitamin C. So you may not know that almost all of the vitamin C supplement manufacturers are making their vitamin C from genetically engineered corn! To make matters even more confusing, the label on the supplement can state Does Not Contain CORN! Yes, it’s true, they legally can say that because it may not contain the corn protein but can be derived from GMO corn. Go figure.

(Anyway this is why I’m such a research detective when it comes to recommending supplements. Another crazy thing that goes on in the healthcare world is that there are companies that sell products online through a ‘black market’ operation and this is why I recommend one distributor that I personally buy my own supplements from. I’ve heard too many horror stories from purchasing supplements from other ‘popular’ online supplement sites.)

Viral hemorrhagic Infections and fevers are usually involved with Vitamin C deficiencies and have the ability to deplete and wipe out one’s Vitamin C. Vitamin C is necessary to elevate red blood cells glutathione levels.

(This is yet another reason why I utilize functional medicine lab tests, in particular a first morning urine test that will show you over 70 markers of how your body is functioning including GI health, Krebs Cycle, adrenal system, methylation, detoxification, sulfation and nutritional markers like Vitamin C, B vitamins, amino acids, NAC, glutathione and more. I see very low Vitamin C levels in many people. Wouldn’t everyone want to know how their body is functioning?)

How to make some homemade Vitamin C

Take some organic orange or lemon peels and grind them in food processor and add one teaspoon to your morning smoothie. Homemade Vitamin C has live enzymes that allow the Vitamin C to be assimilated into your body and it contains its own natural source of rutin, hesperidin, and bioflavonoids.

Sugar interferes with the uptake of vitamin C. If you are using vitamin C to combat a viral infection do not eat any sugar or carbohydrates (long chain sugars) or the vitamin C will not be absorbed properly. Smoking releases enormous amounts of oxidants and free radicals into the bloodstream and possibly hinders even massive doses of vitamin C from preventing infection.

3. Selenium (Se) is recommended since research indicates that the Zaire strain of the Ebola virus may be dependent on selenium levels in the individual raising the possibility that Se deficiency in the person may actually foster viral replication. Selenium deficiency may allow invading viruses to mutate. Selenium is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that controls cytokine storms provoked from infections like Ebola.

4. Vitamin D stimulates ‘innate immunity’ to viruses and bacteria according to researchers from Winthrop University Hospital in New York. Research appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, April 2012, shows that insufficient levels of vitamin D are related to a deficiency in our innate immune defenses that protect us from infections, neoplasias or autoimmune diseases. Since vitamin D levels decrease during autumn and winter when days are shorter and sunlight is relatively weak, this may explain why people are more prone to viral infection during these times. It also suggests that increased vitamin D intake, could strengthen people’s innate immunity against viral infections.

5. Magnesium is an important mineral and low levels are associated with dramatic increases in free radical generation as well as glutathione depletion. Glutathione is necessary in many of the intricate steps needed to carry out an immune response. It is needed for the lymphocytes to multiply in order to develop a strong immune response, and for killer lymphocytes to be able to kill undesirable cells such as cancer cells or virally infected cells.
